The Icicle Granny Square

Our Granny Square of the Month is the Icicle Granny – a homage (and a farewell)  to a lovely winter as we’re heading into spring.

MATERIALS:

Yarn: Medium or Light Weight (e.g. DK), azure, light blue, and white.
Hook: 4 mm (metric) / size G (US) / size 8 (UK / Canada)
Yarn Needle to weave in the ends

Notes:

  • Ch2 at the beginning of each row counts as a dc

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

The Icicle Granny Square Crochet Pattern:

3 dc each side

  • Ch3, 2 dc in the first ch.
  • *Ch2, 3 dc in first ch* 3 times
  • Connect to top of first ch3 with a sl st.

Round 2 (azure):

5 dc each side

  • Ch2,
  • *dc in each stitch from the previous row, adding 1dc, ch2, 1dc in the ch2 space in the corner* repeat all the way around.
  • Connect to top of first ch2 with a sl st.

Round 3 (light blue):

7 dc each side

  • Ch2,
  • *dc in each stitch from the previous row, adding 1dc, ch2, 1dc in the ch2 space in the corner* repeat all the way around.
  • continue dc in the previous row until you arrive back at the beginning
  • Connect to top of first ch2 with a sl st.

Round 4 (light blue):

9 dc each side

  • Ch2,
  • *dc in each stitch from the previous row, adding 1dc, ch2, 1dc in the ch2 space in the corner* repeat all the way around.
  • continue dc in the previous row until you arrive back at the beginning
  • Connect to top of first ch2 with a sl st.

Round 5 (icicles):

11 sc each side

This row is made from single crochets all the way around, adding 1sc, ch2, 1sc in each corner. In order to create the icicle effect, you want to put your hook through the stitches of the rows below before yarning over for the single crochet. You want to make sure that your icicles are all different lengths.

For example. sc in top of row 1, sc in top of row 4, sc, sc in top of row 2.

Join with a slip stitch to the first sc.

Round 6 (white):

13 sc each side

  • Ch2,
  • *dc in each stitch from the previous row, adding 1dc, ch2, 1dc in the ch2 space in the corner* repeat all the way around.
  • continue dc in the previous row until you arrive back at the beginning
  • Connect to top of first ch2 with a sl st.
  • Fasten off.
